What is a micro preemie?

A micro preemie is a term used to describe a baby who is born prematurely and weighs less than 1.75 pounds (800 grams) or is born before 26 weeks gestation. These babies are extremely fragile and often require intensive medical care in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to survive.

Micro preemies are at a higher risk for complications and long-term health issues due to their underdeveloped organs and systems. They may have difficulty breathing, feeding, regulating their body temperature, and fighting infections. They also may be more susceptible to developmental delays, vision and hearing problems, and other health issues as they grow older.

The care of a micro preemie involves careful monitoring, specialized medical treatments, and support from a team of healthcare professionals. Parents of micro preemies may also experience emotional distress and challenges in caring for their tiny baby. The road to recovery and growth for a micro preemie can be long and difficult, but many of these babies go on to thrive and lead healthy lives.
